GTA III - Sayonara Salvatore

I'm having a lot of fun with GTA III now that I'm (mostly) done with
San Andreas. I was reading one of the walkthroughs
(http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=45379&rid=42382) for
it (I only read the missions I've already done to see if I did it the
same way) and was wondering something.

(Spoilers for Sayonara Salvatore)

The guy who did the walkthrough suggests getting the sniper rifle and
going to the roof. While that would have been fun, I like to blow
things up. So what I did was barricade the entrance to Salvatore's
mansion, and then throw grenades as they tried to get through. It
took 3 or 4, but it was immensely satisfying. Of course, I then had
to get out of there quick, running down the hill (probably should have
brought a car with me).

Anybody else do it that way? What are some other ways you've done
this mission, besides sniping or grenades?

Probably not necessary for a game this old, as just about everybody here has
already played it all the way through many times, but whatever.

Well, I figured since he arrives in a limo, this was the perfect opportunity
to make use of your friendly neighborhood bomb shop. Rig a car with a
trigger explosive, and park it right in front of the building. When the
limos arrive, flip the switch and watch 'em go. This technique was also fun
to use with the mission in VC where you have to steal a tank. Get a bomb
that goes off when somebody gets in the car, and park it in front of the
tank. When the soldiers go to move the vehicle out of the way, they get
blown to bits, and if the tank was close enough, it might briefly catch
fire, enough to get the driver out so you can steal the tank...

The first time I just sniped him and his goons. The second I had the
luxury of an ill-gotten BP Cheetah.

Are you sure you don't mean 'Salvatore's Called A Meeting'?

Cheers,
Rob

Nope, that's a different one. This is the one where you're supposed
to kill Salvatore.

Yes, beat that game totally got Silent Assassin on every mission, the last
one is a bitch without alerting anyone.

I got bored of it well before then, and went back to VC.

It's a sign of the measure of a game when you can abandon one uncompleted in
favour of another you've completed twice already.

The Hitman games are probably my favourite games outside of GTA.
Generally I do not go for tactical games much but Hitman shares that
open ended feel of GTA. You can do it either as the expert silent
assassin, or go gung ho and waste everyone you see.

Having said that, Hitman Contracts left something to be desired in the
"Value for money" category. It rehashed the missions found in Hitman 1
and the way it doled out equipment for you to use was somewhat uneven to
say the least.

HC is the only one I've tried in the series- is there any reason to try
Hitman? I ask because I got GTAIII _after_ I got VC, because I enjoyed the
latter so much. If the original is better than Contracts, it might be worth
getting, because Contracts had potential but was just boring.

I got bored of Doom3 within one night of playing, too (form over substance).
No different to Doom and Doom2 and so on, but games need more these days.
Sexy graphics isn't enough.

Halo had potential, but the repetitive gameplay was thinly disguised by a
"plot" in the cutscenes. And "the flood" was just a complete joke.
Apparently Halo2 is not much different. New weapons, and location, but the
interaction and the gameplay remain largely the same.

Looks like I'll be buying Half Life 2 to keep me going until SA is out on
the PC.

That sucks because I haven't received my copy of Contracts yet from an
auction. I suppose its worth a try.

Yeah Halo2 was interesting to me for 2 days.. it felt pretty closed in.
But the plot of being in ships or hangars or whatever kinda writes in
the need for those spaces. Glad it wasn't mine.

Hitman 1 is quite an old game now. You will probably find it in the
bargain bins as it was a moderatly priced game. As the first one in the
series it has some flaws not found in the later two games but they are
not enough to drag it down as a game I do not think, plus tinkering with
the controls long enough solves the problem.

Hitman 2 was a total overhaul from Hitman, incorporating a gameplay and
graphics engine, new control, different mission structures and gameplay
and so on. At most I would call Hitman Contracts an extension pack for
Hitman 2 as its differences are both subtle and the content rehashed.

However all of them are great games, I just wish Hitman Contracts had
been longer and had more new levels in than ones I had visited before.

Hitman Blood Money is out soon, that looks promising!

I drove a coach right across the entrance, and stood behind it. All one then
needs to do is burn the coach, by any means, and it's mission passed.

I really messed up. I had saved before that mission with the
"Pedestrians attack each other" code. As each mafioso walked out he
would start shooting the previous one in the cutscene. After the
cutscene, I get this message Salvatore is dead, so his own guys gunned
him down. Thing is, the only mission after that I can't beat because
of that Pedestrian code is the final storyline one.
